  No Wannabe Barbie

Dear Nancy,
Why do u not try to sound at least a little feminine? Your voice is deeper and more masculine than my husband. Anyone can tell "MAN"
  Lol,
  gfh gfhdf

Well, "gfh gfhdf", you don't have to be rude about it. Sure, I may sound more like a guy than a gal much of the time. I often get "sir-ed" on the phone, so your profound observation is no surprise here. And yes, it does irritate me to have people assume I'm a man rather than a woman.

But the truth is, I like my voice. I can do a lot with it, when I want to. If I want to sound more like a "real woman", I can. I can even sound sexy sometimes. But for doing radio, I want, more than anything else, to sound like a real person, not like some wannabe Barbie. So, I don't worry too much about how my voice sounds. I avoid distracting myself from what is really important.

So what is really important?
Not the sound of my voice, but rather
the testimony of all who challenge the status quo
wherever it chafes against healthy living
and real democratic values,
like respect for difference,
including difference that cuts across gender,
like a woman who sounds like a man.

So, get a clue, "gfh". What's important isn't how femme or masc anyone sounds. It's what's in their heart. Whatever was in your heart when you wrote this email, must have included some sorry stories.

I leave you with this:

May you receive more kindness than you give,
and then pay it back many times over
for the sheer pleasure of doing so.

Love,
Nancy
