Rikki Swin is the founder of the Rikki Swin Institute, a fully funded 501(c)3 foundation whose mission is to "stimulate changes in culture to improve trans person understanding and acceptance". The RS Institute is endowed with over 3 million dollars, making it by far the most well-funded organization created solely to benefit transpersons. Most of the Institute's attention will be on acquisition of historical materials, and on education of medical professionals.
Although we are pleased to see someone investing in the transgender community, we couldn't help but challenge some of Rikki's assertions, like that legislative reform is best helped by influencing doctors, that medical voices are the ones that lead social change, or that transgender is not a useful term. We also couldn't help but express some dismay at her lavishing of money on the relatively affluent medical professionals, while seasoned and proven effective transgender organizers and reformers and lobbyists struggle to achieve their monumental results on paltry resources. Jane Fee is a transgender activist of wide repute, a hero to many for her work in helping secure statewide civil rights protection for diversity of gender and gender identity in Minnesota. A long time Stonewall Democrat, Jane was a delegate at large to the Democratic National Convention. Her presence at the convention made news around the world, as a CNN news crew followed her around for 8 hours, videotaping her presence there.
Still in L.A. following the Convention, Jane fills us in on the Democratic Convention's GLBT participation, and recounts her meeting Al Gore at a recent cocktail party at which she introduced herself and he expressed genuine interest in transgender issues. |

Kylar Broadus, is a transactivist who serves on the National Stonewall Democrats Board of Directors. Kylar is also an attorney and a professor at Lincoln University, a black college in Missouri. Kylar talked with us about how GLBT people fit into the democratic party, and the importance of GLBT support for Gore and Lieberman.
