Transgender activst and legal scholar Jill Weiss returns to GenderTalk this week to fill us in on some anti-trans prejudice and discrimination currently taking place at Northeastern University in Boston. She and others who have felt the sting of bigotry are not sitting still for it, and Jill tells what has happened and their strategy for change.
Jill grew up in New Jersey as a religious jew, and practiced law civil litigation in New York City for a decade. Living as a woman since 1997, she is now pursuing a Ph.D in Law, Policy and Society at Northeastern University in Boston. She is an instructor in the Sociology Department and is particularly interested in the sociology of law and organizations and how they intersect with gender and sexuality.

 TV, newspapers, and magazines all report on scientific studies and in so doing, shape our view of the world in myriad ways. Most of us don't have the time to seek out and read the actual study results, but instead depend on the media reporting to inform ourselves. Roger Lancaster, author of "The Trouble with Nature: Sex in Science and Popular Culture" talks about some of the problems with getting your science from the media.
Roger Lancaster teaches anthropology and cultural studies, and directs the Cultural Studies program at George Mason University. He is co-editor of The Gender/Sexuality Reader and author of the award winning book "Life is Hard: Machismo, Danger, and the Intimacy of Power in Nicaragua", winner of the C. Wright Mills Award and the Ruth Benedict Prize.
