51:07 Question of the Week

"In terms of gender identity, the world seems to place so much importance upon whether we are male or female, and at the same time, it places so much importance upon identifiers such as clothing and mannerisms. But as transgender people we are asking the world to not place such rigid standards upon gender so that we can become our true selves. What has been confusing me, however, is that if others are making a big deal out of my being transgender, why am I making it a big deal to be identified as a female? At one point in my life I thought I could just be me, neither male nor female, that is, society's definition/s of gender. But as I become older I feel a strong pull to my feminine self, a self I always felt I have been. Am I making any sense? I guess what I am asking is what is truly male and truly female? I definitely feel female."

65:05 All too often, men who have murdered trans women have successfully defended their actions as "heat of passion" actions resulting from their panic at "discovering" the shape of the trans woman's genitals. Now, a proposed law in California promises to end the use of that defense. Victoria Steinberg, law clerk at the Massachusetts Appeals Court and social justice activist, talks about the "trans panic defense" and the best strategy for opposing it.

99:08 Some transsexuals (and transgender persons) who transition to the opposite gender live in their new gender without those around them knowing about their opposite-gendered past. Called "stealth", this practice is becoming less and less tenable, according to Mara Keisling, excecutive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. She talks with us about how those who live in 'stealth' are increasingly being outed as a result of new federal security practices.
