Li Anne Taft (lwaioli@cs.com), a transwoman and paddler on a Hawaiian women's outrigger canoe team since 1996. Li Anne is challenging as gender discriminatory a paddling rule that requires a birth certificate from anyone whose gender is called into question. The rule was recently enacted by a man not affiliated with her team who has long objected to her participation, and who recently ascended to president of the statewide paddling association. Although Li has the support of her teammates, she is being specifically targeted by this man's transphobia, both within the association and in the press. Li Anne is an office operations supervisor who lectures on transgender issues, writes a monthly column on gender for a local magazine and posts a weekly TG news listing for Hawaii on the web at members.delphi.com/liannew.
