Question of the Week
"I was just listening to gendertalk and in response to being asked whether you identified as bisexual, you said that you identified as human, and also I think you said you identified as a person not in denial. If you don't mind, I had a couple of questions about that. I was wondering what your thoughts are on labeling sexual orientation, and how you came to identifying yourself this way? Also, do you identify with the queer community, and what do you think of that term? "

One of the trans activists who made a favorable impression on us at the recent CLAGS (Center for Lesbian And Gay Studies, NYU) conference in was Rikke Mananzala, a transgender queer Filipino American (pinoy). He is a 2004 New Voices Fellow and coordinator of the Organizing Support Team based out of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. He provides campaign development assistance to NYC groups such as FIERCE, A TLGBTSQQ of color organizing project that focuses on the impacts of gentrification, police brutality and 'Quality of life' policies on tg and queer youth of color in Manhattan's West Village. Rickke also volunteers with the Police/State Violence working group at the Audre Lorde Project and is a board member of the 3rd Wave Foundation.
