Joan Roughgarden, 'out' transsexual and world-renowned theoretical ecologist, on her experience in transitioning, and on the truly astounding diversity of sex and gender in nature

TIME TOPIC               (Click on bold/colored text below for web site or email)
00:00 Introduction
12:18 Question of the week
Question: I'm a pre-op transexual, living full time since I was 17, I am now 35 & I don't know if I really want to have surgery. I am very passable so work & boyfriends family has never been a problem, but I just don't know why I'm hesitating I just don't know what is wrong with me. (from Belinda in Sydney, Australia)
Question: I was raised in a fundamentalist cult (Jehovah's Witnesses) which believed that the world would end in 1975. Everything was in black and white: good and evil, male and female etc. The leaders ruled against trouser suits for women using Deuteronomy 22:5. Could my transvestism be a reaction to all this? (from Diane)
Question: I have been on (Premarin 5 mg. and Spiro 200 mg. / day) hormones, my question is that my sexual orientation has changed from hating men to needing one, confused is this normal? (from Allison in RI)
23:11 Hal Fuller's Twisted Nasty News
34:04 Boston area (and some national) announcements
37:50 Joan Roughgarden, a transsexual woman who 'came out' in 1998, is director of the Earth Systems Program at Stanford University and a world-renowned and respected theoretical ecologist. She is the author of five books and over 120 articles, and is currently finishing a new book entitled "Evolution's Rainbow". In this fascinating interview, we talked with Joan first about her experience as a highly visible transsexual, then about the astounding diversity of gender in nature and why this information might have been overlooked by previous biologists. We also spoke briefly about her candidacy for San Francisco district 6 supervisor.
