Question of the Week
"I am a lesbian woman involved with a transgendered person, however it is very difficult for her because she has two kids, job concerns and things have been a little crisis oriented. Now she is talking about driving to somewhere and just ending her life. All the love I have and our life together doesn't matter. I am so torn up..I can't talk her out of this I have tried and don't know what to do! Please help me-I can't let this wonderful person dissapear-I know she is unhappy and keeps telling me how she loves me so much and so on....what can I do-we had talked about a life together..and now she wants to end everything!!"

The transgender community is legion with stories by and about the wives of crossdressers. Tri-Ess (the largest organization of "heterosexual cross-dressers") struggles with the issues that arise, and Amy Bloom wrote disparagingly about such relationships. In a refreshing take on the issues, Helen Boyd has written a book titled "My Husband Betty" that just might turn a few people's ideas about such things upside down.
Helen talks openly and engagingly about the issues that partners face, including identity and sexuality, as well as transgender and queer identities and whether crossdressers and their wives belong as part of the larger GLBT community. She also talks about some of the issues she and others face in coming out to friends and family. For more information:

Eve Ensler's play "The Vagina Monologues" will soon be performed worldwide to benefit the international anti-violence movement, and for the Los Angeles performance, she's she's adding something a little different to her lineup: an all-transgender cast. Andrea James & Calpernia Adams, trans activists and artists, talk about the upcoming performance in LA, where their audience of Hollywood insiders could significantly change the way that transgender persons are depicted on the big screen in the future.
